My Asssessment Philosophy
Assessment is a necessary tool for measuring the growth of students. It is beneficial to both the students and teacher. Assessment allows students to understand where they started in the art making process and how much they have grown in a certain amount of time. With assessment, students will know how far they have come, teachers can make adjustments to curriculum and teaching, and parents can see how their student is performing in school.
Why should we assess?
Without assessment, there would be no definite method to measure development in the classroom. Assessment is a tool to help students and teachers make informed observations of a students’ progress and then make adjustments that are beneficial to the student. Students are able to reflect on their art making and then use that information to help inform their future projects.
When should we assess?
Assessment should occur at the beginning and end of a project and as often in between. It is important to assess the process of
creating art. While creating an art piece, students are problem solving, making decisions, evolving, and learning, it is essential to document this process to show exactly how the students are growing.
Portfolios
Portfolios allow both students and teachers to assess the progress of the students. Students can upload artworks and reflections to show where they started and how far they have come. Creating a portfolio helps students visually identify how they have progressed throughout a semester. In a portfolio, the student can organize their work and include pictures and sketches of his/her process. Portfolios can be electronic or physical, but both demonstrate evidence of learning and growth.
Scoring and Judging
Students should be scored based on curriculum that is based on the learning objectives. Each objective should be aligned with one of the four standards, comprehend, create, reflect, and transfer. Rubrics can demonstrate to students exactly where they are succeeding and where they may need to improve.
Reflection
Reflection is an important part the assessment process. Students should always be reflecting on their art and the art making process. When reflecting students should consider:
